Walking through Snow

We were going stircrazy with the weather keeping us in. Finally today we left in the snow to do some errands. We went to the farmer's market which is still going for 3 more weeks. They had xmas trees and wreaths. The slipper and hat place was selling a lot of their merchandise. We did some winter cleaning when we got home too, making this a very productive weekend. Now we're about to test our limits by jogging in the snow to the videostore.

Xmas presents

Sam and I were reflecting on how we don't have money these days. It's not an unhappy thought, we likened ourselves to the couple in the "Gift of the magi". He offered to get me a new cell phone for Christmas and I declined and told him "no, its better if we just give each other poems that we write for each other". He agreed that it was a great idea.

Reality TV

We were watching some reality TV tonight and it was so annoying to see Trista make her wedding plans. She actually had her wedding planner email and call her parents to keep them apprised of what was going on because she was too busy. Is that the epitome of self absorbtion? But, I did get a great idea while watching that show. Sam and I are going to have joint bachelor-bachelorette parties. That way we can simplify and save time and share the event. I believe that bachelor parties are about male bonding above everything else, and he has so many guys offering to hold him parties he wants to have more than one. But I think if we were together, it would be the most special occasion.

Isn't it funny

Sam's favorite actresses are not renowned for their acting ability. Julia Stiles and Sarah Michelle Gellar are not great actresses, I can objectively say. And the thing that gets me is that he won't admit that someone like Kirsten Dunst, who is still pretty, has far more talent and range. How will I ever be able to critique movies with someone so biased? I can see that he agrees, but it's almost like he feels a sense of loyalty to these B-movie future has-beens, and he will squint and grimace through his strange allegiance to them.

Movie Reviews

There are a lot of movies coming up for the Oscar race. I haven't seen anything yet though. I caught Love, Actually while I was out of town, and it was cute but left you wanting more information. Tonight I'm going to see The Station Agent for my $5 movie night. By oscar time, I plan to see all the main contenders and give you my votes and predictions. In other arts, I've done some reading while away, and the side bar will show you more reviews.

Turkey Week

The holidays are here. I've heard Christmas music on the radio several times. I'm going to go get our 8lb turkey for Thanksgiving. I can't wait for the left-overs. For me, a turkey and rolls would be splendid. Sam, on the other hand, wants turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, vegetables, rolls, and potatoes, etc. We've never cooked a turkey before, so this is going to be fun.

Returned

I am so glad to be back home. I had a great visit in California and accomplished many things. I saw 3 old friends, helped out my mom through surgery and recovery, and made wedding progress -we've now decided to try to make Italy work in mid August. I also introduced my parents to Sam's parents over dinner in SF. And now, I'm back in Ithaca getting organized. Surprisingly, the weather here is warmer than California right now, making it easier to return.

Meagan Scores!

Just in from my 16hour day travelling cross country and my sister calls with great news. On her first Ultimate Frisbee game this season, she scored 2 goals. Without having anyone to sub, she ran the whole game. She said to make sure everyone knew, especially Bob.

Places

I'm in Davis now, my mom is out of the hospital. Being in SF this past weekend was fun and reminded me of how much I like that city. It was warm too- I wonder if I'm acclimated to NY weather already! I realized that if I lived in a bigger city, I'd have more interesting things to post on this website. As it is in Ithaca, with winter picking up, I don't think we'll get out too much. Looking forward to going back there in 1 week though.

Update

My mom's surgery was successful. The tumor was removed and she has low chance of any facial paralysis but a good chance that she will be deaf in one ear. Its a little disheartening, but still, we are grateful for the results. I'm using my wireless in public for the first time. Its so handy to have the internet in the hospital. We looked for plane tickets, and we can update our family on the surgery. I'm looking forward to being able to see her.

Going Home

I'm packing my bags for a 16 day trip back to California. I will be very busy during that time; helping my mom through surgery, scouting wedding venues, seeing friends, etc. I may not be blogging much, depending on how well I can find wireless cafes in Davis.

Skagen

Both Sam and I have Danish blood. And so we thought ourselves amusing when we bought twin watches from a Danish company. It wouldn't have happened that way had we both not believed those watches suited us best individually. Anyway, that was about 5 years ago, before we left San Diego. And last week, within a few days of each other, both of our batteries finally died. Funny, isn't it? The accuracy of watch battery life.

My Life Without Me

I went to see this movie tonight, alone. I love to go to the theater alone sometimes because I can watch it from only my perspective -no filters of other people grimacing or emoting next to me (although those things are exactly what I enjoy some other times). This movie was really well done, and some of the monologues of Sarah Polley's character or Mark Ruffalo's character were so well conceived. I didn't agree with some of the decisions the main character made, but I was still intrigued by the story and performances. I left wanting to treasure the way life feels and how things seem. And after seeing it alone, I'd like to have my mom explain it because she does that better than anyone else.

Sad songs

I'm working on making a cd compilation for my friends for christmas. not of christmas songs, but of what i've been listening to lately. and so far, its kind of a downer. i finally got the emmylou harris cd by cheaper means, and some of these songs are really sad. and there is that annie lennox song that makes me cry everytime i listen to it. and there is also a cover of a tears for fears song from the movie donnie darko. maybe its just me, and i should shelve this project for now.

Fright night

I can't believe Halloween has ended. We went to a B-school party tonight and were really impressed with everyone's costumes. Original ideas and well done. My favorite was richard simmons, and sam's favorite was charlie brown. There was a matrix group, 2 charlie's angel groups, mr. & mrs. universe, a bored rich house wife and a pool boy, a mounds bar and an almond joy, a really scary grim reaper who i actually ran from, carson daly... we realized that we didn't do the couple thing, and that would have been a fun challenge. I was the garden of eden, which you can see on sam's site or on the sidebar. Sam was himself...a chick magnet. We had a lot of fun making these costumes.
