Ultimate Taste

Have you ever thought about the perfect taste. Most people in the world have either a sweet tooth or a salt tooth. For me, I think that something that incorporates both tastes is the best. Good examples would be: toffee- especially in Heath Bites. Also, kettle corn popcorn- a little sweet edge to the salty popcorn. Or barbeque chips. Hmmm. I will try to find more examples.

Movie Weekend

Better Luck Tomorrow - an asian-american movie that started out really well. It was funny and quick and reminded me of life in San Diego. Then- it took a turn for the worse toward the end and I can't recommend it.
Master and Commander- interesting if you can make it past the first 1.5 hours. I could maybe recommend it if there was even 1 woman in the film.
Kill Bill- sam's choice, and Uma was great, but the blood sprays were too much.

okcupid.com

Here is a match making site, which I went on just for the quiz. Honest (Sam)! It was really interesting- and I guess I can reveal that my type is "the peach". haha. You'll have to take the quiz on www.okcupid.com to see more for yourselves. And you don't have to join anything or even give your real email.

Ellen

Has anyone caught a minute of her new talk show? When I get home from work at 445, I catch the last 15 minutes and if you've never see her dancing, which she does AT LEAST once a show...well, she just puts me in the best mood.

Calling all Patty Griffin Fans

Finally I can buy a cd without feeling guilty! I just bought Impossible Dream by Patty Griffin. I have loved songs off this cd for weeks now, and finally I'm able to treasure it. I'll be making a copy for a few people...

We Got Lucky

It turns out that they do get tornadoes here. This weekend the weather got really dark at 2pm and the wind was threatening. I joked with Sam that it was a tornado (but i thought tornadoes were only in the South). It almost was a full fledged tornado. And people have basements here for shelter. Sadly, we don't have one, and we are on the second floor! Once again, I have narrowly evaded Danger.

Investment Club

My friends are inviting me to join an investment club. I don't really have a lot of money to invest, at the moment, but I think it would be fun. There is no need for us to have a book club because we all read and recommend books to each other- and none of us live in the same states. So, I am going to make an effort to learn about the one thing that I ignore in all of the papers & magazines I read.

Destination Johnson

It was an exhausting weekend for me. We hosted a great guy though, who was interesting and funny and shared some of our interests. He ended up showing us around though, since we don't have a car and he came here for undergrad. Still, I haven't been that socially active in a long time. I get lazy when it comes to that- and the minute I leave a party of people that are trying to talk to me about their resumes, I feel so much FREEDOM!

Favorite Seasons

Happy Easter Everyone!
Sam thinks that Easter is a second-rate holiday. I don't think so. It is a pastel holiday. I love a chance to celebrate the springtime. Spring used to be my favorite season, but now I'm not sure. When I first moved here it was Fall, because I had never lived in a place where the Autumn leaves and slanting sunlight made life so resonant. But now, having passed the winter, I'm going to appreciate the summer the most.

Catch up

New books, nothing really noteworthy to comment on. I read Come To Me by Amy Bloom because Salon.com posted an article by an anonymous author that stated the humbling parts of trying to be a writer- and the word on the street was that Amy Bloom wrote it. So naturally, I was curious.

I also liked the Madeline L'Engle article in the New Yorker. Who doesn't remember A Wrinkle In Time or A Swiftly Tilting Planet or A Ring of Endless Light?? Made me want to read those books again. Although, I don't remember it being like they said - that there were two groups of girls - the girls that had read those books and the girls who hadn't. Our generation wasn't that exclusive.

Eternal Sunshine

Finally, after 3 weeks of trying, we saw this movie. It was very imaginative and quirky, like all of Charlie Kaufman's movies. And overall I liked it. Still, I can't help feeling a little sad over all those lost memories. They are worth so much - how can you just move on without missing them, or in this case, miss what was missing?

Actors that Turn you OFF

Since Sam mentioned the Amanda Peet curse, I thought it would be fun to write about actors whose movies I avoid. It may not be because they are a horrible actor/actress but becuase they choose bad scripts.
My top 2 are:
Angelina Jolie (lately) and Julia Stiles (period).

Foreign Film Lovers

In the last year, I have seen many foreign films, but I want to recommend 2 now.
The Cuckoo, we watched tonight. It was fun watching 3 people of different languages do a lot of talking to each other. The story was fun and the scenery was beautiful. And I think Sam enjoyed it, which is rare!

Another movie that you can't miss was The Fast Runner. It is a movie set in the arctic with an amazing story. The Inuit are master story tellers and this movie was also beautifully set.

Something's Gotta Give pales in comparison- although the beginning was funny.

New Yorker Magazine

This week's new yorker is the best I've read in some time. First there was financial page which was so different from the others! Then came the hip hop article that was kind of funny. Then the article about height which was very informative and made me want to leave the USA again, and made me realize how disloyal I can be to my homeland. Then there was the Laurence Fishborn article which was too long to read, but I skimmed some interesting snippets about his relationship with his mother and his kids. hmmm.. then my favorite article was about the chinese kindergartner. I loved how his parents told people he was ugly & stupid if someone thought he was cute & bright because they were superstitious. Lastly, I didn't read the fiction but the author is one of my favorites -motherless brooklyn was an outstanding book.
I started reading the new yorker of a friend in college for the poetry. Then I bought it for the fiction. After that I read it for the talk of the town. Now I don't read those parts as much but read the longer articles and the financial page. The financial page writer is one of their best.
